As promised, here are the photos from our One Year Anniversary Showcase that was held on April 30, 2010. Click below to enjoy the photoset on Flickr, or just peruse the slideshow embedded on this page! Milwaukee Public Schools held a press conference on Thursday, May 6. Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton eloquently delivered the press conference’s message:
THIS is what Milwaukee Artbeat is all about! We support and endorse this message with each showcase, and you can too! Thanks to everyone who made the show possible! The gallery was amazing, as were all of the performances! This show generated our LARGEST donation to Milwaukee area youth arts programs TO DATE! Pictures and video highlights of the show are coming for those who missed it. Next show is Friday, July 30 – mark your calendar. YOU WON’T want to miss it!!! We are proud to announce our partnership with Capoeria Nagô Milwaukee – they are working with us to provide the unique dance and martial art form to our youth! Capoeira Nagô Milwaukee is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to spreading Brazilian culture throughout the Midwest, principally through the art of capoeira. Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, dance, music and acrobatics. Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. The result was a “game” of fluid ground movements, spinning kicks, and daring acrobatics set to the energetic clapping and singing of spectators. Today, capoeira is an international sensation: in fact, it is the second most played sport in the world, second only to soccer. We will enjoy a performance by a capoeira dance group in our One Year Anniversary show, themed: “A Taste of Central and Latin-American Flair!” Please join us for the celebration, and experience the magic of this beautiful, unique art form!
“I am so honored to be co-hosting with Annie B for the 1-year Anniversary of Milwaukee Art Beat. It is great being involved with an organization that helps promote and showcase our local artists!” Lisa states. Lisa’s online networking site: http://LisasList.org is a site where locals engage in business and social networking. She hosts networking events on a regular basis, so visit her site and find an event you’re interested in, and meet Lisa!! We are very pleased to have her join us and, we hope YOU will join us on April 30th at the Hide House as well, for the only arts show of its kind!!
Make sure to get to the Hide House early enough to participate in the salsa lesson at 7pm – taught by Christine Almeida! Anyone can participate, with or without a partner! If you’ve ever thought about taking Latin dance lessons, now is your chance to move your hips and get a taste! There is no cost to participants, but we do ask a small donation to cover the cost of Christine’s services. Christine was recognized as the authentic “Salsa Goddess” in a recent Milwaukee Magazine Publication. Journalists Perry Lemek’s article “Some Like It Hot”, read, “Make no mistake; Almeida is Milwaukee’s authentic Salsa Goddess- fiercely proud of her heritage and profoundly well versed in the history of her cherished avocation.” Also, look for Christine – appearing on The Morning Blend on Monday, April 12th! Please join us and bring a comfortable pair of shoes to change into for your salsa lesson! There will be plenty of space for the dance group! Even if you have two left feet, Christine will get you shaking like a pro in minutes! You can visit her website at http://latindancecompany.biz !!
